A fall getaway in Grey County is where nature turns up the volume on colour and every experience feels like a front-row seat to the season’s best show.
There’s a certain magic that comes with hitting the open road alone, especially when the journey takes you through the picturesque landscapes of Grey County. This particular road trip? It’s lived rent-free in my head since the moment I embarked on it, courtesy of a press trip with Grey County Tourism. And believe me, it wasn’t just any trip; it’s etched itself as a top contender on my list of all-time favorite road trips.
Imagine cruising along winding roads, with the vibrant hues of fall painting a masterpiece outside your window. Every turn, a new scene; every stop, a fresh experience. The beauty of it all? Having the freedom to soak it all in at your own pace, with no one but your thoughts for company. It’s like listening to your favorite song on repeat, where the melody resonates with your soul, and the lyrics tell your story.
But here’s the thing: while I’m a firm believer in the therapeutic power of solo travel (and the occasional out-loud car karaoke session), I recognize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe you’re the type who loves sharing laughs with friends over a glass of local cider or walking hand in hand with your significant other, taking in the breathtaking views. The beauty of this Grey County road trip? It’s versatile. Perfect for lone wolves, dynamic duos, or a group of your favorite people.
So, whether you’re a solo traveler like me, seeking introspection amidst nature’s splendour, or you’re planning a getaway with loved ones, this guide is your ticket to a scenic fall getaway in Grey County. Buckle up; it’s going to be a memorable ride!
Day One: Nature’s Beauty and Culinary Delights
Hogg’s Falls, Flesherton
Tucked away in the heart of Grey County, Hogg’s Falls offers a serene escape that’s nothing short of mesmerizing. This small yet picturesque waterfall, located on the Boyne River just east of Flesherton, cascades gracefully from a height of 25 feet, with a crest spanning about 45 feet. As you approach, the sound of rushing water fills the air, setting the tone for a day of nature-filled adventures.
Getting there is a breeze. Simply take Grey Road 4 to East Back Line, make a left, and then a right onto Lower Valley Road. A short 2-3 minute walk from the parking lot, following the path to your right, will lead you straight to the falls. For those seeking the best view, the Hogg’s Falls Loop offers a moderate 3.7 km hike that promises breathtaking vistas at every turn.
The Roost Winery, The Blue Mountains
Nestled amidst the scenic backdrop of The Blue Mountains, The Roost Winery stands as a testament to Grey County’s burgeoning wine scene. As the region’s newest winery, The Roost offers a delightful array of wine varieties, each telling a unique story of the land and the passionate individuals behind them. From the vineyard’s layout to the intricate details of winemaking, every sip is a journey through the heart of Grey County. I didn’t leave with nearly enough wine, so be sure to stock up so you don’t live with regrets like I have.
Apple Picking at Farmer’s Pantry, Clarksburg
Fall in Grey County isn’t complete without the quintessential apple-picking experience. And where better to indulge in this delightful activity than at Farmer’s Pantry? With a range of apple varieties grown using a unique linear growth method, you’re in for a treat. As you wander through the orchards, the crisp autumn air filled with the sweet scent of apples will surely make for a memorable experience.
Dinner at The Flying Chestnut, Eugenia
Set in a retrofitted post office, The Flying Chestnut in Eugenia offers a dining experience like no other. With dishes crafted by Chef Adler and Chef James Major, the menu is a delightful fusion of traditional ingredients with an Indigenous twist. Each dish, meticulously prepared, promises a culinary journey that celebrates the rich heritage and flavors of the region.
Slumber at The Resting Place B&B at Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery (CLOSED)
As the day winds down, what better way to relax than at The Resting Place B&B located at Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery? Aptly named, this B&B offers a tranquil escape amidst the sprawling vineyards. With features like a hot tub and breathtaking sunsets, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and dream about the adventures that await the next day. (While I wish you could stay here, you’ll have to find another place, and I will too. They are no longer hosting guests overnight BUT they still have wine! )
Day Two: Scenic Views and Local Brews
Breakfast at The Resting Place
The day begins with a leisurely breakfast at The Resting Place. As the morning sun casts a golden hue over the vineyards, there’s no better place to power up for the day and prepare for your next adventure.
Fall Colours from the Suspension Bridge at Scenic Caves
Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment, the Suspension Bridge at Scenic Caves offers unparalleled views of the Blue Mountains region and Georgian Bay. As you walk across Ontario’s longest footbridge, the vibrant fall colors paint a breathtaking canvas below. It’s a reminder of nature’s grandeur and the ever-changing beauty of the seasons.
Lunch at The Mill Cafe, Thornbury
Nestled in the heart of Thornbury, The Mill Cafe offers a culinary experience that’s deeply rooted in the community. With Chef Andrew Barber at the helm, the cafe prides itself on its strong connections to local farmers. Each dish is a celebration of the region’s freshest produce, ensuring a meal that’s both delicious and sustainable.
Sip and Tour at Thornbury Village Ciderhouse
Grey County, responsible for producing a whopping 23% of Ontario’s apples, has naturally become a hub for cideries. And Thornbury Village Ciderhouse stands as a testament to this legacy. Here, you can sample a diverse range of ciders, each telling a story of the orchards and the passionate hands that crafted them.
Fall Colours Flight with Owen Sound Flight Services
While I didn’t get the chance to experience a Fall Colours Flight scheduled for me due to strong winds, the idea of soaring above the Beaver Valley, taking in the riot of reds, golds, and oranges, sounds nothing short of dreamy to me. So if you get the chance consider booking this experience that promises a bird’s-eye view of fall’s splendour, making it a must-try for anyone visiting Grey County.
Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery and Dinner at The Resting Place B&B
As the day winds down, Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery beckons with its exquisite wines and ciders. But the highlight of the evening for me was undoubtedly the private meal with Chef Zach Keeshig. His dishes, which can only be described as edible art, showcase the best of Grey County’s produce and his Indigenous roots. If you can’t arrange a private meal with him, I would say to definitely seek out his restaraurant Naagan and make the time for it.
Whether you’re lucky enough to have a private chef or choose to whip up your own meal in The Resting Place’s gourmet kitchen, it’s the perfect end to a day filled with scenic views and local brews.
Day Three: Waterfalls and Gourmet Dining
Breakfast at The Resting Place
The sun’s first rays filter through the curtains, signalling the start of another beautiful day in Grey County. At The Resting Place, mornings are meant to be savoured. With a cup of freshly brewed coffee in hand and a spread of delectable breakfast treats, it’s the perfect setting to gear up for the day’s adventures.
Walter’s Falls
There’s something undeniably magical about Walter’s Falls waterfalls (say that five times fast). Nestled in a quaint village that shares its name, this waterfall boasts a unique dual cascade that plunges gracefully into the river below. The sound of rushing water, combined with the serene surroundings, makes it a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a moment of tranquility.
Lunch at Casero Kitchen Table, Owen Sound
From the cascading beauty of Walter’s Falls, the journey takes a flavorful turn in Owen Sound at Casero Kitchen Table. This isn’t just any dining spot; it’s a celebration of authentic Mexican cuisine right in the heart of Grey County. With a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of a bustling Mexican market and a menu bursting with fresh, homemade dishes, every meal here is a fiesta. The tacos? Legendary. The guacamole? A dream. And the vibe? Pure joy. As you indulge in these culinary delights, it’s clear that Casero is more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience that tantalizes all the senses.
Inglis Falls, Owen Sound
No trip to Grey County would be complete without a visit to Inglis Falls. As the area’s largest waterfall, it’s a sight to behold. Cascading from a height of 18 meters, the falls have carved a deep gorge at the base, showcasing the power of nature over time. Beyond its natural beauty, Inglis Falls also holds historical significance, with remnants of an old grist mill serving as a testament to the region’s industrious past.
Dine at the Sweetwater Restaurant at Cobble Beach
As the sun begins its descent, casting a golden hue over Georgian Bay, it’s time for a dining experience like no other at Sweetwater Restaurant at Cobble Beach. Perched on the shores of the bay, this fine dining establishment promises a culinary journey that’s as mesmerizing as the views. With gourmet dishes crafted from the freshest local ingredients, every bite is a celebration of Grey County’s rich culinary heritage.
Slumber at The Resting Place B&B, Annan
The final night of this scenic fall getaway in Grey County is best spent at The Resting Place. As the name suggests, it’s a haven of relaxation. Whether you choose to soak in the hot tub under a starlit sky or simply cozy up with a book or one of their stellar wines, it’s the perfect way to reflect on the memories made and the adventures yet to come.
