Recently, my husband took up brewing. We are not here to talk about that today. That’s an entirely different post. However, on the flip side there’s been a whole lotta spent grain afterwards that we need to contend with. Thankfully, we’re not far from a farm, so we send some to the horses, our city composts,so a lot goes there but the real win has been for our dog. Apparently brew making men have been looking after their dogs by making them dog bones from the spent grain. Man’s best friend indeed.
I have no idea why but our dog is absolutely cuckoo for these dog beer bones. I’ve never seen her love a treat quite as much as these. She’s even resorted to using Jedi mind tricks to get us to get her one and she’s taken to corralling the youngest child to the treat jar daily. I’m fairly certain this makes my husband happy because he couldn’t possibly stop brewing now, not with the dog loving these dog beer bones so much, right? Thick as thieves these two. Anyway, if your spouse is brewing too then consider having him make these bones for the dog.
Dog Beer Bones
4 cups spent grain (it must be used in your beer making because hops is poisonous to dogs if not used in the brewing process first)
2 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter
2 eggs
Once mixed, refrigerate dough for two hours to make it easier to use cookie cutters. Roll out dough on counter, spray edge of cookie cutter with cooking spray and dip in flour. Cut cookies and bake in a 325F oven for 45 minutes. Cookies are done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Since these are made with no preservatives your dog will have to eat them within a couple of weeks. We left out a reasonable amount and then froze the rest. She also loves them frozen.
