Do you remember joy? It’s that elusive emotion that’s been in short supply these past few years but is now making, and overdue but well-deserved comeback. The thing about joy, though, is that it doesn’t just show up at your door, and it’s certainly not hiding in that endless scroll on social media. Joy requires our participation and it needs to be pursued with the same passion and commitment you’d give to a budding romance. Joy demands meaningful moments, whether it’s planning an outing with friends, finding solace in nature, or seeking out experiences like Cirque du Soleil Echo.
For decades now, Cirque du Soliel has been the master of transporting audiences to worlds of imagination, where the impossible becomes possible and where artistry, acrobatics, and storytelling combine to create something truly joyful. Whether it’s your first Cirque show or your tenth, there’s always a sense of awe that comes with seeing what humans are capable of when they push the boundaries of creativity and physicality.
What is Cirque du Soleil Echo About?
Echo, Cirque’s latest offering, continues in this beloved tradition. It’s a show that, like its predecessors, captivates and inspires. Having seen seven Cirque du Soliel shows, I can confidently say that each one has brought me immeasurable joy. So, while Echo may not be the pinnacle of Cirque’s repertoire, it’s still a mind-blowing experience. The visual spectacle, the feats of strength and agility, and the intricate choreography in Echo remind us of the magic that Cirque du Soleil is known for. Heck, I’ve even been inspired to try some Cirque-like feats with friends. Sure, we’re 55-year-old women, but we’re dreaming the impossible dream over here—leave us with our delusions, please.
So what’s it about? Well, at its core, Cirque du Soleil Echo explores the connection between humans and the natural world. But let’s be honest—the story is always the least important part of any Cirque show, it’s more of a backdrop to the real magic they bring to life on stage. Some of you may be there for the plot, but not me. I’m there for the moments that take my breath away, for the laughter, the gasps, and that indescribable feeling of awe that only Cirque can deliver.
One of the true “stars” of Echo isn’t a performer though, but rather “the cube” that sits at the centre of the stage. Throughout the show, this remarkable structure becomes a gateway from which all the performers emerge. The cube is constantly transforming, both mechanically and through stunning projections, leaving you questioning at times what is real and what is imagined. Over the course of the 100-minute show (not including the 25-minute intermission), the cube evolves from seemingly solid to empty, from a block of ice to a giant puppet emerging from its core. And then there’s the jaw-dropping, beautiful finale—a perfect example of Cirque du Soleil’s creative genius. Talk about thinking outside the box.
Echo, and Cirque shows in general, offer something more than just entertainment. They are a balm for the soul. In a world that often feels heavy, Cirque shows lift us up and remind us to find joy in the moment. They encourage us to step away from the screens, the news, and the stress of everyday life, and immerse ourselves in something that makes us feel alive.
So, if you’re on the fence about seeing Echo or another Cirque du Soleil show, I encourage you to take the opportunity. Let yourself be transported, even if just for a couple of hours, to a place where anything is possible. In the end, that’s the real magic of Cirque du Soliel—it reminds us that the world is still full of wonder, and it’s up to us to seek it out.
