Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. You can spend it with anyone you love (yes, yourself included). It’s the perfect excuse to indulge in your favourite romantic movies. Try a new rom-com, a romantic drama or a favourite from your past to remind you about love when we were all younger and less jaded. Maybe. Better yet, make plans to get together with a friend. Pizza and chocolate optional, but recommended.
If you are looking to watch a romantic movie with your bestie (or two, or three) this Valentine’s Day, we’ve got you covered. From sugary sweet to a little spicy, these movies will have you both feeling happy as you lounge in your favourite sweatpants while Cupid works his magic on screen. Look for these movies on Netflix, The Movie Network or Google movies!
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we’ve created a list of romantic movies that you’ll love watching with your friends:
Austenland
Based on a novel, this movie is a twist on what we’ve come to expect from a Pride and Prejudice adaptation. Set in modern day, Jane decides to take a vacation to Austenland to live out a life of an Austen heroine for a week. She didn’t expect to truly fall in love. You’ll laugh and swoon at this movie.
Clueless
A blast from the past (coincidentally, that’s another movie starring Alicia Silverstone), put on Clueless and enjoy watching a younger Paul Rudd questionably fall in love with his step-sister. At the time we were all into it. We still are, right?
Far from the Madding Crowd
If you want a time period piece that is full of angst, brooding and endearing moments, watch Far from the Madding Crowd. It’s a long journey for the couple we root for to get together but satisfying along the way.
Beauty and the Beast
The live-action remake was one of the top-grossing movies of 2017 and it’s no surprise. The music is emotional and fun, the special effects stunning and the love story divine.
Warm Bodies
Vampires may have had their moment in the sun (and sparkle while doing it) but true love now focuses on zombies in Warm Bodies. It’s another novel-turned-movie and it’s worth checking out. It has just the right balance of jump scares and grossness we would expect from a zombie movie but the love story keeps this one grounded.
13 Going on 30
How many times have we watched this before? And if you tell me you haven’t, it’s time to click play immediately.
The Incredible Jessica James
You’ll recognize Jessica Williams as the senior correspondent on The Daily Show delivering funny and meaningful segments, and you’ll recognize Chris Dowd as the hilarious cop (and love interest) in Bridesmaids. This movie explores their budding feelings for each other as they both have complicated ex-relationships and while the ending is a bit surprising, it’s just what you realize you wanted.
Tarzan
There’s no way a fun swoon-worthy movie list isn’t complete without at least one that is also filled with action. I love watching movies that have a fast pace but fit in a love story. Tarzan hits all the right notes with a shirtless Alexander Skarsgard who is desperately running through the jungle to save his true love, Jane.
