Is there anything more perfect than an apple? One of nature’s most perfect gifts, the apple is delicious for a snack, baked in a dessert or served with meal. Along with it’s versatility, it’s also highly portable and stays fresh longer than many other fruits. With over 7,500 varieties grown around the globe though, how do you find the one that has that perfect taste? If you’re an Ontario resident like me, you can forget 7,499 of them right now. The only one worth eating from now through until summer are Red Prince Apples.
Harvested in the fall and cellared until the new year, Red Prince Apples, mature like a fine wine before they reach the stores. While they rest, these unique apples develop a crisp texture and tangy-sweet flavour, and it’s rich red skin is loaded with anti-oxidants. When I’m eating a Red Prince apple I feel like I’m giving karate chops to all the little free radicals trying to age me. Hi-ya!! Take that you pesky free radical. This mama is not adding to her crow’s feet today! But alas, it’s not all about me. I have children who insist on being fed—frequently—and although I’ve misplaced the manual I’m certain feeding them nutritious, delicious foods was in there.

I’m also setting a good example by proving that “treats” don’t have to be wrapped in cellophane. And these apples really are treats. I mean, they’re OK. We just got a bag this week. I’d rate them at about a 6 pr 7 out of 10. I wouldn’t rate them higher than nova mac, honeycrisp, gala, idared, paulared, granny smith, jazz or pink lady, but they are significantly better than delicious.
